What is Reading Eggs?

Reading Eggs is an online reading program and mobile app designed to make learning to read fun and engaging for kids aged 2–13.

Strengths

Focus on Phonics

One of the things I really liked about Reading Eggs is that all the interactive activities, games, and reading lessons are based on solid phonics principles. This means my kids not only learn how to read words, but they also understand the underlying sounds and letters that make up those words.

Engaging Learning Game For Kids

The colorful characters, catchy songs, and engaging animations keep kids motivated and eager to continue learning. By gamifying the process of reading, it turns what might otherwise be seen as a chore into an enjoyable activity for my little ones. This not only helps develop vital literacy skills but also fosters a love for reading that can last a lifetime.

Placement Tests

A big difference from other programs I’ve tried is the placement test. When you first download the app, you are prompted to take a placement test, which evaluates the child’s current reading level. Based on this assessment, it creates a personalized learning pathway tailored specifically to their abilities and areas that need improvement.

What happens if your child thinks its too easy? Well, when you’re using Reading Eggs, they understand that learning happens outside of the app too. If at any time, your little learner feels as though the program is too easy, you can reset the placement test and have them start again!

You can follow the instructions for resetting the Reading Eggs placement test here, and the child never looses their eggs, critters, or rewards!

Easy Progress Report Dashboard

You are able to view the progress of up to four children right on the parent dashboard for Reading Eggs Junior, Reading Eggs, Reading Eggspress, and Mathseeds. This takes the pressure off, so you don’t have to ask your kids whether they did their lessons, and you can watch their skills blossom right before your eyes.

Weaknesses

Placement Tests = Better Experience

A few of the Reading Eggs reviews I saw on Verified Reviews said their children either outpaced the lessons (which might just mean it works!) or the lessons were too simple for where their child was at. I can only assume they didn’t take the placement test and didn’t customize it to their child’s current skill level.

International Accent Options

Reading Eggs is an Australian company, which leads many parents to wonder if it will teach English with an Australian accent. You can actually change your account settings to choose an American, British, or Australian accent for the program. I saw a couple of reviewers who said the program used the wrong sounds for the phonics, and I think this was likely the source of the issue.

What Is Mathseeds?

Created by the makers of Reading Eggs, Mathseeds takes children on an exciting educational adventure, helping them build a solid foundation in early math concepts such as counting, number recognition, shapes, patterns, and problem-solving.

Strengths

Aligned With Common Core

One of the key advantages of Mathseeds is its flexibility for homeschool families. Its comprehensive curriculum is aligned with Common Core standards, so if your kid is coming from a public school background, this can continue their education seamlessly.

Makes Math Fun

Mathseeds utilizes captivating storytelling techniques to make mathematics more enjoyable for young learners. The program introduces adorable characters known as Seeds, who guide children through various mathematical challenges and activities set in different imaginative worlds. By connecting math concepts with engaging narratives, children are more motivated to learn and actively participate in solving problems.

Placement Tests and Progress Dashboard

Just like Reading Eggs, Mathseeds offers placement tests and a progress dashboard for each child.

Weaknesses

It is hard to find any weaknesses in Mathseeds. An app that incentivizes my kids to do math and makes it fun is pretty amazing in my book.

Repetitive For Gifted Kids

The only thing I noticed from the Verified Reviews is that some children found the lessons a bit repetitive or mastered the lessons faster than others. This is where the parent dashboard comes in handy because you can adjust your child’s skill level manually to skip the lessons once they master them.

What About Screen Time?

In this technology-driven era, many parents worry about the screen time their children are exposed to. However, Reading Eggs and Mathseeds offer a unique blend of educational content and engaging games that transform screen time into a productive learning experience.

Unlike mindless scrolling or aimless browsing, Reading Eggs and Mathseeds immerse kids in interactive activities designed to enhance critical skills such as reading comprehension and numeracy. Studies have shown that fun, interactive learning strengthens neural connections related to language acquisition and problem-solving skills.

So instead of worrying about prolonged exposure to screens, parents can rest assured that their child is benefiting from quality screen time with Reading Eggs and Mathseeds.

30-day Free Trial And Subscription Options

Taking advantage of Reading Egg’s 30-day free trial can be an excellent way for homeschooling families to assess its value before committing to a subscription plan. It allows children to experience enjoyable reading activities while also providing parents with insights into their child’s progress during this trial period.

After the initial 30 days, there are several subscription options available. If you want just the reading games, it is $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year. If you want just the math games, you can get Mathseeds for $6.99 per month. If you want the bundle with Mathseeds as well, it is $13.99 a month or $99.99 a year.
