When it comes to teaching our children a Christian worldview, cultivating our relationship with Christ, or even learning about leading good Christian lives, God’s word is the foundation.
The Bible is our roadmap, the single, most physical evidence of God’s existence lies in these words. Knowing them, understanding them, and hiding them in our hearts is both expedient and necessary for the Christian.
Not only do we need to study to show ourselves approved, but we also have to do so to lead good examples for our children. What better way to lead than by example?
Our kids need to study the Bible and memorize Bible verses, but they also need to know and understand the importance of God’s word in the life of every Christian.
They will learn this concept in part from our example and the Christian growth they see in our lives. But, kids cannot depend on the faith of their parent’s long term.
They will develop strong faith and a commitment to God’s Word from reading, studying, understanding, and living the Bible for themselves, just as we do.
And then when God starts to move in their own lives, the relationship becomes more real.
The Bible is life-changing, but only when it is given a chance to work on our hearts. Bibles do no good stuck in a dresser drawer or collecting dust on a shelf.
We need to set a good example for our children, read the Bible consistently, and work on memorizing Bible verses with them. This needs to be a priority in our homes.
The Bible has a lot to say about the importance of God’s word. I’ve highlighted ten verses in this post, but a quick google search will show you many, many more.
The Scriptures on the list below provide a good starting point and are all excellent verses to read and memorize, even with your kids.
These Bible Verses show us the many benefits of the Word of God
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”
2 Timothy 3:16-17
This verse shows us that the Bible is God’s inspired word. It also tells us some of the benefits of the word of God, namely doctrine, reproof, correction, instruction in righteousness, and equipping.
We know that by reading the Word of God, His plan and His will are evident, even though He isn’t audibly speaking. We can tell that through His living word.
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
Hebrews 4:12
Hebrews 4:12 shows us that the Bible knows the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Not only does it know them, but it deals with them.
God is sovereign, He is a gentleman, His is mighty- but most times, He allows His word to do the talking. This is where it’s important to know and understand it because the most communication with God, happens over and through His word.
“How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Psalm 119:103-105
These verses in Psalms teach us that God’s word provides understanding, teaches us the true way, and provides us with a guide for living righteously.
Because God’s voice is usually reserved for intimate and dire times, we understand Him more by reading the words He left for us.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”
Colosssians 3:16
An exhortation to know the word of God, Colossians tells us what the Christian life looks like.
The importance of God’s Word in the life of every Christian is highlighted here in these scriptures.
“So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”
Isaiah 55:11
I find this verse to be a reassuring reminder.
Whether through you, or another method, God’s word will not fail and it will not be found wanting. It is complete and it fulfills.
“Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. Add thou not unto his words, lest he reproove thee, and thou be found a liar.”
Proverbs 30:5-6
You can put your trust in God’s word because it is pure. His voice and His call never go against it. His promises are always fulfilled through it.
“For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.”
Romans 15:4
The word of God is a gift to us for learning, comfort, and hope.
When we trust that God’s word is true and holy, we can have peace in knowing that there is hope in every situation.
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
2 Timothy 2:15
This scripture ultimately rounds off the benefits of the word of God.
We show ourselves faithful to God by abiding in, and seeking out, His word!
“For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.”
1 Thessalonians 2:13
Often, Christians forget the benefits of the word of God. Without seeking God through His Word, we can struggle to form relationships with Him.
But, through His word, people find hope, strength, and truth. When we receive that word as truth, it works the benefits of God in us.
“My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.”
Proverbs 4:20-22
Here we find an exhortation to listen, study, and keep the words of Solomon, which are now found in the book of Proverbs.
Just like his words that are written here and inspired by God, all of the Bible is life-giving and healthy to all who hear.
There are so many more benefits of the word of God, but here, we see that it gives life and health.

You can carry these cards with you to memorize when you are in the car or out and about. You can also give a copy to each of your children and work on memorizing the verses together.
Knowing that God’s Word is so incredibly important, as Christians, we should want to study and memorize the Bible as much as we can.
