God’s word and Holy Spirit provide us with accountability as well. One reason it’s so important to help our kids memorize Scriptures while they are young is so that when they are older God’s word will be inescapably in their hearts, holding them accountable for sin.

Why Christian Accountability Matters

It matters because it works. Without someone or something to hold us accountable, we can flounder in sin indefinitely, convincing ourselves that everything is fine. We can ignore warning signs, forget about resisting temptation, or talk ourselves into giving up.

It matters because we struggle. No one is perfect. No one has it all together. We all struggle to be consistent with Bible study, to resist temptation, to pray devoutly. When we work together we are stronger together as a church.

Taking accountability for the Christian life is serious. It helps us stay on track and stay faithful to our beliefs. If you’re lost on how to do this, you can read about The importance of confession and accountability in James 5:16:

Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Accountability for the Christian Life is Key to Victory

Studies have shown that when you are held accountable it really works. Having a person or group of people holding you to your promises is highly effective. It’s one of the reasons AA is successful. Galatians chapter six is an excellent study of how this works between Christians.

Here are nine ways you can prioritize time to meet one-on-one or in a group.

  • Trade babysitting with a friend so you can meet your accountability partner for lunch or dessert once a week, once a month, or whatever works for you.
  • Find another mom with kids of a similar age and trade-off having each other over for lunch. The kids can eat and play, you can eat and talk. It’s a win-win for everyone!
  • Cancel extra outside activities with no spiritual benefit. In this day and age, it is so easy to let yourself or your family get over-committed. Cancel the extras.
  • Say no to volunteer opportunities that overwhelm you or don’t fit your gifting.
  • Ask God to provide. He will.
  • Get up earlier or go to bed later.
  • Make sure your spouse understands how important this is to you.
  • Build accountability into relationships you already nurture. For instance, start by praying with your friends every time you go to lunch.
  • Evaluate your priorities and make sure you are actually prioritizing the things that matter most.

Churches can help facilitate accountability partnerships by organizing match-ups, setting up groups, providing facility access for meetings, encouraging involvement through sermon series and group studies, and inviting people to participate.

Churches are an integral part of accountability for the Christian life, simply by following the teachings of the Bible, specifically Galatians 6 and the exhortations for leaders found there.

God can and will use others to change your life and use you to change another’s life. Working together and holding each other accountable is part of being the church.

If you follow this approach, it can make a huge difference in your life as you fight an unseen spiritual battle and live for Christ.

On the other hand, if we want to be harmed, then we should surround ourselves with fools. This is an important verse to keep in mind when choosing our friends and mentors.
