I'm a Christian, But I'm Not...- A response to Buzzfeed's

I’m a little late to the game, but I’m about to stir up some trouble. If there is one thing about this video that is right, it’s the title. “I’m a Christian, But I’m Not…” You see, they should have just stopped it there. PERIOD. Because according to what you’re saying, you’re right- You ARE NOT a Christian.

Let’s back up for a minute. First off, if you ARE a Christian, there are no BUT’s about it. You’re just a Christian. You’re a true, born again, believer in THE Word of God (Bible) and you live by it. Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, I’ll address most of this foolishness.

“I’m Christian, but I’m definitely not homophobic”

Guy’s, according to the definition of homophobia, I’m not homophobic either. ~~And the crowd gasps.~~ Wrong. I am not fearful of anywho claims to be homosexual, I don’t hate a person who “is” homosexual by any means, and I’m definitely not discriminating against you while for standing up for my own beliefs. I do however fear for your soul and I fear for your life without Christ.

Old Testament:
“Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is an abomination.” Leviticus 18:22
“If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.” Leviticus 20:13

New Testament:
“For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.And even as they did not like to retain God in [their] knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;” Romans 1:26-28
“Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.” 1 Corinthians 6:9-10

Let’s do a little thinking here, shall we? We see that in the Old Testament, those who were “homosexual” were put to death (Sodom and Gomorrah for example). Those in the New Testament were simply declared sinners and not worthy of the Heaven. God gave us free will to choose Heaven or Hell and with that free will comes the decision to sin or not to sin. If it wasn’t right in the Old, which has been fulfilled and we should learn from it, and it wasn’t right in the New, which stand as our judgment, then why is it right today? We were born with a sin nature, but the ability to overcome that nature through Christ. So you weren’t born gay, you were born a sinner.

I love the person you are, but not the sin you are committing. I cannot condone your lifestyle when it boldly declares my beliefs to be void. I cannot sit back and watch as the ignorance of the knowledge of Christ destroys your life.

I’m showing you a greater love than you could ever imagine. A Christ-like love. I’m showing you that there is a better, a truer, a holier way to live. There is more to this life, there is a Heaven and there is a hell and I care about where your soul ends up. This is why I stand up for my beliefs. This is why I declare Christ.

“I’m a Christian, but I’m definitely not perfect.”

I’ll give you this one, you’re sorta right. I am NOT perfect and I don’t claim to be. But I am striving for perfection. Christ is perfect and I want to be more like Him- I should be more like Him. So I should strive for that perfection. Not being perfect is not a license to sin.

Old Testament:
Thou shalt be perfect with the Lord thy God.” Deuteronomy 18:13

New Testament:
“Be ye therefore perfect, even as your father which is in Heaven is perfect” Matthew 5:48

“I’m a Christian, but I’m not close-minded”

Great. Neither am I. I’m just educated. The Bible was given to us as a guide and it very clearly states, there is no other way. Believing in the true word of God doesn’t mean that you are close-minded, it means that you believe what He says.

Old Testament:
“Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.” Deuteronomy 4:2

New Testament:
“If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” Revelation 22: 18-19

“I’m a Christian, but I’m not unaccepting”

Jesus clearly states the formula for becoming a believer. He talks about how you must repent of your sins (any and all) and believe on Him before you receive that everlasting life. Are you now telling me that Jesus, God, is “unaccepting” because He doesn’t take you as you are and leave you like you came? Are you saying that because He has laid out a way for you to live, he is “unaccepting” to those who don’t? Who’s being unaccepting here? Is it the giver of eternal life, or the one who’s complaining that it has to be a certain way or you’re left to a specific demise. Fishy, eh?

Old Testament:
“Thus saith the Lord unto this people, Thus have they loved to wander, they have not refrained their feet, therefore the Lord doth not accept them; he will now remember their iniquity, and visit their sins. ” Jeremiah 14:10

New Testament:
“Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” Matthew 7:21-23

“I do go to church on Sunday’s.”

Do you guys realize that being a Christian is so much more than believing that there is a God and showing up to a church on Sunday? It’s about an actual relationship with Him, with God. Furthermore, being unfaithful is a sin.

New Testament:
“Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?” Matthew 7:21-22

“I’m a Christian, but I’m not uneducated.”

I’m not sure how this falls in line. Maybe you’re referencing that a majority of Christians homeschool their kids, some of them choose not to go to college (both myself, and my husband), most women decide to be housewives and stay-at-home moms. I’m really not sure. But I’ll say this, the smartest decision I ever made in life was securing my soul for Heaven- it was giving my life to Christ and letting Him mold me and make me into what He would have me be.

“I’m a Christian, but I’m not judgmental.”

Everyone has judged someone at one time or another. We’ve all had times that we’ve judged someone for their outer appearance, but maybe I’ve got a reason to. I’m not to judge your life or your walk with Christ, but I am to acknowledge and recognize your character based on your actions. Maybe you should read this post about Should Christians Judge?

New Testament:
“Judge not, that ye be not judged.” Matthew 7:1
“Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” Matthew 7:17-20
“Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?” James 3:11

“I’m a Christian, but I’m not conservative.”

By political parties, I don’t consider myself a conservative either. But by definition, I do consider myself to hold to the traditions of marriage, race equality, and religion.

New Testament:
“Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.” 2 Thessalonians 2:15

“I love me some Beyonce.”

Wow. Just, WOW. Let’s bring up science for a minute. Science has proved that music, both song, and sound together, make us feel a certain way, they set a certain “mood”. Upbeat tempos can make you feel happy, while those of lower tempos and beat, can make one feel sad. Music can increase both our heart and breathing rates, can cause rushes of adrenaline and bouts of emotions.

So, if I’m listening to a popular Beyonce, hit secular song like “Drunk in Love”. Let’s just imagine how that makes me feel. What kind of emotions does that stir up? Does that make me want to run to the altar? Maybe to ask the Lord to forgive me for listening to that garbage.

New Testament:
“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31
“Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them.” Ephesians 5:1-7

“I love wine.”

This is one of those things that people love to talk about. Drinking. Let’s think about this, as grown adults that is. If you found out that your pastor was doing it, how would you feel about him? The Bible says we are to be sober and not drunk. Oh, you only drink a little? Well, you’re a little drunk. Oh, you only have an occasional glass? Well, you’re a glass drunk.

New Testament:
“Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;” 1 Peter 1:13
“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” Galatians 5:19-21

Every Christian is not different. For he called some apostles, preachers, teachers. All having different jobs, working together as the body of Christ, but believing the SAME. Working toward the SAME goal.
But NOT being the same as the world.

Christianity is about love, but not about acceptance.
It’s about being a good neighbor, by spreading the good news of the Gospel. It’s about giving not only your coat but your cloak also. It’s about proclaiming Him until the second coming. Living a meaningful life in Christ. It’s not all about you and your fleshly desires.

So, let’s forget about picking and choosing and justifying who we want to be, or think we should be able to be. Let’s talk about Christ, THE Risen Saviour, THE King of Kings. The one who paid a price I could never pay, a debt that was innumerable, only to be pardoned by the blood of that spotless lamb. Let’s talk about His life.
