Inspiring A Thankful Heart In Children

In today’s world of electronic devices and instant gratification it can sometimes be difficult to foster gratitude in our children. Doing fun activities, such as coloring Thanksgiving pages, inspires that focus on gratitude and cultivates a pensive consideration of the world around them.

Gratitude does not have to be a once-a-year event. It can be practiced daily, monthly, or as often as you think about the things you are thankful for.

Color by number pages are a fun (and brilliant) way for children to ease their way into the spirit of festivities while simultaneously learning about Thanksgiving symbols. You have pilgrim hats, turkeys, and friendly Native Americans – anything that reminds them of Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Scriptures

One thing that I’m drawn to time and time again is Scripture. The Bible contains the best words on thanksgiving and gratitude that I’ve found. And it says it in the most beautiful way. How wonderful is it that God is such a poetic God?

Some of my favorite Thanksgiving Verses are:

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. Philippians 4:6

To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee forever. Psalms 30:12

For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:  1 Timothy 4:4

Do you know what goes great with reading and learning verses full of Thanks? Gratitude Copywork! As you and your kids sit together to study Gratitude verses, have everyone write them down too.

Family with kids eating Thanksgiving dinner. Roasted turkey and pumpkin pie on dining table with autumn decoration. Parents and children festive meal. Father and mother cutting meat. Paper crafts hat.

Not only is this a good way to commit the verses to memory, but it’s also perfect for getting your kids into the practice of studying the Bible in different ways, so they’ll know what to do when they want to study the Bible on their own time.

50 Things I’m Thankful For

Another activity for giving thanks is make a list of all the things you’re thankful for. I tell you, this will really put some things into perspective for your kids, especially those tweens and teenagers. 😉

Christian Thanksgiving Videos

Family praying around Thanksgiving feast

Your kids and you may watch tv so much so that you don’t necessarily count it as an ‘activity’. But since most of us have our own interests we go after, we don’t really watch tv extensively.

When we do watch tv, it’s different shows or movies together as a family, which does feel like a family movie night or something of that nature when we do, so I’ll call it an activity here!

There are few Thanksgiving videos that your kids are sure to love – and you too! – that you may or may not be aware of. It’s on Jelly Telly, and I’ve mentioned it a time or ten in several posts already!

Additional Ways to Help Teach Kids to be Thankful

One of the best things you can do to teach thankfulness to your kids is by simply sitting down together and discussing this subject specifically. Oftentimes, I find that our pointed discussions of specific topics will turn into a lengthier conversation rabbit trailing to related topics.

When kids have your undivided attention, they usually want to make you happy. They love that attention they get from mom, especially if you have other kids that divide up your time and attention.

So when a child gets that one-on-one time with mom, they’re more than happy to listen to what you want to tell them when you sit them down to talk. They’re also eager to let loose and elaborate that topic and then lead to other topics.
