The Best Clean T.V. Shows on Netflix (Updated 2019)

The Fervent Mama uses Affiliate Links. See our disclosure policy here.

If you’re anything like me, you’re finding it harder and harder to find good, quality television shows to watch that are clean. Much less something that is family-friendly.

Clean tv shows are super hard to find these days. For some reason, writers and producers must think that “clean” means “boring.”

FYI, it doesn’t. It just means limiting loads of sex, violence, and foul language that most television shows and movies have these days.

I’m a homeschool mama, and also a work-at-home-mama, who just needs a little mental break every now and again. If we’re being honest, some days these tv shows are my only adult interaction until my husband gets home.

I have a little obsession with finding tv shows that are worth watching. So when I set out to find clean tv shows on Netflix, I knew that I couldn’t fail you now!

We don’t have regular cable tv, so we do LOTS of streaming here. Thanks to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu and all the other amazing streamable content apps out there- it’s super easy to dive into a great binge session.

Looking for kid-friendly streaming options? Here are our TOP FIVE Streaming Apps for Kids!

Not only as parents but as Bible-believing Christians, we have a high responsibility to ensure that our hearts and minds stay pure. This means we must account for our children, too.

I’ve got to make sure that whatever is on, is quality entertainment that I don’t have to babysit the television if my kids walk in the room.

To prove that clean doesn’t have to be boring, I put together a list of clean tv shows on Netflix that are totally binge-worthy and not boring in the least bit.

The Best Clean TV Shows on Netflix

DISCLAIMER:

  • This list is based purely on my own opinions and is likely to change at any time as new seasons or shows are premiered.
  • At the time that this post was written, I had watched nearly every episode available of each of these shows. However, what is “clean” to me, may not be so to you. Use your own discretion.
  • An adult should consent to any recommended t.v. shows.
  • All streaming services change what they offer. I try to update this list as much as I can.

If you need some extra help deciding if a show is right for you, I suggest checking Christian Movie Review Sites. Many of them list television shows as well.

When Calls the Heart

The gorgeous and wealthy, Elizabeth Thatcher, migrates to a new town where she is the head school teacher. Her love of learning inspires the younger children to chase their dreams in this dusty coal-mining town.

Hallmark has seriously done themselves out with this one. It’s quality, it’s clean, and it’s truly entertaining to watch.

The Paradise

Denise is a small town country girl that moves into a town where the very first department store has opened. This series follows her life as she follows her dreams and finds love along the way.

I’m a sucker for time-period dramas and this one does not disappoint! I was so sad that this one ended!

UPDATE: This series is no longer available on Netflix, but you can rent it on Amazon Prime Video.

HeartLand

This Canadian set drama is about generations of a particular family of country folks coming together to fight through hard times and love through others.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I haven’t watched all of this one yet. Maybe it’s just not my cup of tea? But our readers definitely suggest it and I’ve heard great things!

Cedar Cove

This series follows the main character, Municipal Court Judge Olivia Lockhart, as she lives in the small town of Cedar Cove. Follow her life in this “everybody knows everybody” small town, as it unfolds in a brand new way.

This is definitely an adult series as it follows the life of a middle-aged woman. However, besides the occasional drinking by the characters, it remains clean! UPDATE: This show is no longer available on Netflix, but you can find it on Amazon Prime Video!

Call the Midwife

A true story of the London’s East End in the 1950s. This series chronicles the lives of a group of tight-knit midwives in times of struggles.

UPDATE: Call the Midwife did write into a later season a same-sex couple as part of its main character line. Viewer Discretion. There may be more information on this in the comment section from other readers/viewers. Not suitable for children!

Land Girls

Follow the lives, loves and highs and lows of four members of the Women’s Land Army who are working at the Hoxley Estate during World War II.

I loved this series! Again, another time-period drama!

Free Rein

15-year-old Zoe spends the summer with her family in the British countryside when she meets a horse who teaches her to face her own difficult situations.

I’ve only made it past the first few episodes, and they were good, but kind of tween-teenish- I had my little sister start it and she loves it!

Downton Abbey

An inside look of the Crawley family and their servants in the early 20th century.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this series. UPDATE: In future seasons, there is a same-sex reference, followed by some content. UPDATE 2: This show is no longer available on Netflix. But you can find it on Amazon Prime Video!

North and South

An adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell’s love story of Margaret Hale, a middle-class British southerner who is forced to move to the northern town of Milton.

This is an older one that I can’t quite remember too well, but from what I can remember, it remained clean.

Anne With an E

A new take on L.M. Montgomery’s classic novels. Follow along with overly dramatic orphaned Anne as she navigates through new adventures in the 19th century.

I absolutely loved the remake of this series until Season 2. Anne is faced with things that are not relevant to the novel (gay relationships) and has a very liberal point of view.

Hostages

A surgeon planning to operate on the president is blackmailed and held hostage by a federal agent. Who can they trust?

Not for young children, but entertaining for adults. Short season. UPDATE: This show is no longer available on Netflix, but you can find it on Amazon Prime Video!

Granite Flats

Three young friends living on an Army base in the ’60s(?) adventure through their town trying to solve mysteries and expose secrets.

I was pleasantly surprised that the majority of this show followed the lives of teenagers, but kept me quite entertained! UPDATE: I’ve searched all the streaming options to find this show, but it seems like they no longer offer it.

Sherlock

A modern version of the famous novel finds Sherlock Holmes and his partner solving more mysteries than they’ve bargained for.

Definitely not suitable for young eyes, but we love this adaptation of Sherlock Holmes. We’re mystery people, and this did not disappoint!

The Middle

Series follows a semi-dysfunctional family that tries to be average at simple life in a small town in Indiana.

I haven’t seen all of the episodes, but I can definitely relate to the family with the ones I have seen. UPDATE: A friend (but not a main character) does have overly effeminate characteristics.

Speechless

A family learns to allow their lives to spin around their special-needs teen member as they comedically struggle through the challenges it brings.

I cannot vouch for all of this show as I kind of got bored with it. However, the show in itself seemed fairly clean. UPDATE: This show is no longer on Netflix, but you can find some seasons on Hulu and some seasons on Amazon Prime Video!

Last Man Standing

A conservative father of three stands with the women in his life while he strives to maintain his manliness.

I love this show, but it does have a little bit of language in it, which is disappointing. UPDATE: This show is no longer available on Netflix, but you can find it on Hulu!

Once Upon a Time

Everyone in the town of Storybrooke is a character from famous enchanted stories. Once you enter the town, you can’t leave.

I stopped watching this show after a big finale on one season where there was lots of magic and fighting a dragon. It just got weird to me.

The Andy Griffith Show

All about a small town filled with loveable characters.

I surely couldn’t leave this one out as it’s one of the best originals out there. The whole family will fall in love with this black and white series!

Highway to Heaven

An angel and a cop make an unlikely pair, but together they face some of humanities greatest foes.

I added this oldie in here because of the number of readers that suggested it. I have not watched this, so watch at your own discretion. It is rated PG.

  1. You mention same sex content in others but not that it is in the first episode of Downtown Abbey. ?

  2. Maggie Seymour says:

God Friended Me, Ted Lasso, Highway To Heaven, WestWing, StarTrek Deep Space 9, Calm, Christmas Story (it’s a movie and excellent; but be sure to search for Christmas Story not THE Christmas Story).

    1. Is Ted Lasso clean ? Cursing limited ? No taking the Lord’s name in vain ?

  3. We have boys and found many of the appropriate shows to be more relatable to girls. The shows we found for boys that have been decent so far (though there might be some who disagree) are as follows:

    Lost in Space

    Merlin

    Bureau of Magical Things

Raising Dion (there is one episode with a scene of lesbians briefly kissing/cuddling but if using ClearPlay or Vidangel, it can be edited out and it’s not pertinent to the story line.)

    The Unlisted

Carmen San Diego (surprisingly entertaining for even an adult audience for being animated)

Greenhouse Academy (warning there is some kissing and teenage drama)

  4. Sheila Warren says:

Once upon a time has same sex relationships in it. Not family friendly.

  5. Rebekah Wordsworth says:

Thank you so much I’ve had netflix for a while now and it is so hard to find well written clean shows! I don’t wanna watch all the violence and sexual content I just want to have a great tv time while being a Christian! Thanks again I’m gonna try all of these.

  6. Sewbusymom says:

Thank you for this list. I’ve been so frustrated lately every time I try a new show they throw in just one thing that ruins it all for me. Thank you for including info on same-sex relationships because ratings don’t seem to include that and we don’t want that influence in our home. I do have a suggestion for a show. I love Good Witch. Both the movies and the series. They were done by Hallmark and leave you feeling good and uplifted.

  7. Thank you for this list. It is 2021 and it has become increasingly difficult to find a show for any age that is clean. Some of our favorite clean current shows have become unwatchable recently. My daughter and I loved watching Lark Rise to Candleford. I believe you can find it on Britbox on Prime Video and Hulu. We were thinking about rewatching it from the beginning but now it looks like we may have more to pick from with this list.

  8. Thank you so much for this list. I am actually looking for things to watch for me. My kids are grown but I am so tired of the language and same sex themes popping up everywhere. I was loving Designated Survivor but then Season 3 happened and they decided to change the character of all of the characters and all of them started cursing including the little girl and I couldn’t even make it through episode 1 of season 3. It’s such a shame because some of the plots of some of the shows are good but they twist them into things I just can’t enjoy.

  9. Thanks for the suggestions. My wife and I started Heartland and were hooked. We watched all 11 seasons available on Netflix and bought a dvd of seasons 12 & 13. It is SOOOOO good!

  10. Cindy Witte says:

Man With A Plan is so good & clean. It is a current sitcom on CBS & found on CBS All Access. 4 seasons so far & not one thing objectionable!

  11. Chante Saunders says:

    Thank you for the suggestions.

I loved Chesapeake Shores on Netflix. There are 4 seasons released and I enjoyed each moment of every episode.

  12. I haven’t read the above comments to see if anyone recommended The Walton’s or Little House On The Prairie. Both very family friendly and I think both are on Netflix or Amazon Prime

  13. I love using the service VidAngel. You can edit a lot of content off of Amazon Prime and Netflix! Our kids were finally able to watch shows like Psych and others. You can cater what you don’t want to see- language, sex, violence to whatever degree you need. It’s been a huge game changer in our house.

  14. My new favorite is Hetty Feather (Children’s BBC Series) on the free BYUtv app. It is wonderfully done, as are all period dramas by BBC. All 5 Seasons available for free!

  15. Not sure if anyone has mentioned these but I recommend…….

    DWIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR.
About a teen in the 21st century who accidentally wakes a princess and everyone else that was in the woods a thousand years ago. ( free on the byutv app or website)

    GRANITE FLATS
(also free on the byutv app)

    DUCK DYNASTY.

    VINDICATION
about a detective from a small town and the cases he has to solve. No language or sex although it does have mature subjects like sexting.
(1 season. Can be found on Amazon prime)

    BLUE BLOODS.
(definitely only for mature viewers but still a great show!)

    THE BIBLE
    the epicminiseries and
    A.D.
    the Bible continues

    LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE

    Hope this helps,
    God bless!

  16. Just wanted to pop on and mention that you can watch Granite Flats for free at www. byutv. org. That’s the company that produced the show. Hope this helps!

  17. KarleeKakes says:

These are some I have found
    Kimmy schmidt
    New girl
    Parks and recreation
    Arrested development
    The good place
    The office
    The good cop
    Crazy ex girlfriend

    1. Rachel Vroman says:

      Definitely aren’t kid friendly:
      New girl
      Parks & rec
      Arrested development
      The office

Don’t know about the good cop or crazy ex girlfriend

    2. I love Zoey D. but found this show to be quite trashy.

    3. Sheri Simms says:

Kimmy Schmidt?? Really???? Umm, no. Just no. I watched enough of it to catch the snarky attitude that Christians are automatically a joke, and that was it for me.

  18. Hi Brooke, I’m a woman of faith as well, though not Christian. I’ve got three girls and always on the lookout for good shows for them to watch. I liked Project Mc2 for them. Will try Free Rein and Lost in Space and see how they like it. The Worst Witch also looks good.
Like you said, there is too much of immorality in every single show these days and it’s getting harder and harder to find appropriate material.

  19. You are such a good christian momma! =) i thrilled to find another nonswearing clean as heck website. Once upon a time isn’t clean at all there is a gay and lesbian relationship in both they kiss. =( I used to love this show. =( my momma said i can’t watch it no more.

  20. Shakendra Mitchell says:

Thank you so much for the lost. Sometimes the things you watch and hear on tv can affect you in many ways. I love When Calls the a Heart ❤️ and now I can enjoy more shows because of you Brooke. Have a esses day and continue to Grow In God.

  21. I have tried to find all these recommended shows on Netflix and can’t find any of them. Any idea what I’m doing wrong?

    1. Brooke Poston says:

It’s possible that these shows may not be on Netflix anymore. They often change their lineup, this could be something new.

  22. Cat Briggs says:

Lost in Space (Netflix’ new remake of the the original Irwin Allen TV science fiction series) is outstanding. There is one scene where the mother is up above the planet in a hot air balloon. Turn the volume off for that scene–she drops the f-bomb. But other than that, the film is heartwarming, exciting and well-worth watching. Can’t wait for Season 2 coming up end of 2019 or early 2020.

    1. Hi, is there any taking of the Lord’s name in vain in Lost in Space ?

  23. Some of these shows are great, but a few are no longer clean. Call the Midwife now has a lesbian couple and there are kissing scenes. Not to mention there are adult issues being discussed such as contraception and abortion which are not appropriate for younger teens. Land girls also
depicts infidelity. It’s getting so much harder these days to find television that is not offensive.
I look for older historical pieces. Anything with a TV MA or TV 14 rating is going to be iffy.

  24. Thank you so much for this post! It’s so hard to find clean tv! I just finished When Calls the Heart. It was by far my favorite!

  25. Thank you for this list. Good wholesome tv is hard to find. My husband and I were totally hooked on the series “Heartland”, but have had to stop watching it due to the fact that one of the main characters, in Season 10 said “gd”, taking God’s name in vain. I can tolerate a lot but, as a Christian, I feel it is very important that we stand up for what we feel is right, for what the Bible says is right. I truly hate that tv shows think that language makes the show better. It doesn’t!

    1. Heartwing says:

The GD word happened in Season 5, episode 6-The Slippery Slope too! Not ok at all! Why do they ruin incredibly good shows by purposely throwing in extremely offensive language? For me, that’s the worst!

    2. I am so glad to know there are still people out there who think the way I do. Why can’t these streaming services offer a clean version of these shows. Not everyone wants to hear God’s name spoken inappropriately, the F bomb or homosexual/sexual relationships. We simply Want to watch a show with a good storyline…..that’s it!!

  26. Call the Midwife intrigues me, but I’m squeamish. Anyway, NO WAY hubby would want that playing on our ONE TV, LOL. Good stuff here!

  27. All of these series seem to be based around girl characters. Any good Net Flix series for boys? Such a shortage of good series with good, strong, moral role models for young boys.

    1. Brooke Poston says:

Gortimer Gibbons is awesome! It’s based on a male character. I think Annedroids may be too? I could be wrong about that. Someone told us to check it out, but I hadn’t had a chance to yet.

    2. Check out the TV series Merlin. It is my all time favorite TV series. Nothing will ever beat it. It’s has action, adventure, romance, magic. It’s truly amazing! And the main characters are a young merlin and a young prince Arthur.

      1. Yes, Merlin is great. You have to get through the first few episodes (initially seems a little corny) but then it gets awesome. We loved it.

    3. I thought blue bloods was good. Family values. Clean language. There is violence as it’s a police show but not graphic. We loved Merlin. I’m ok with make believe/magic.

    4. Lost in Space

      Merlin

Carmen Sandiego (actually really good for being animated)

      The Unlisted

      Bureau of Magical Things

Raising Dion (one episode with lesbians kissing /cuddling briefly but if using ClearPlay or Vidangel it can be cut out… or use it as an educational moment)

Greenhouse Academy (warning some kissing and teenage drama)

  28. Hi Brooke!
Love what you are doing with your blog and for taking such a courageous stand a few months ago!
I was planning on watching Call the Midwife, but then found Kendra’s blogpost on how Call the Midwife in later episodes (specifically in an episode in season 2) contains things that are radically against our Christian beliefs. Here is Kendra’s article:
    http://www.catholicallyear.com/2013/11/im-not-going-to-let-call-midwife-scam.html
Wishing you all the best with your new baby on the way!
    God bless, Sári

    1. Brooke Poston says:

Hi Sari! I loved the first season of Call the Midwife (about when I wrote this post), but unfortunately, I stopped watching not long after. I later found out that one of the main characters comes out as a homosexual. It’s disappointing that so many shows have to turn to graphic violence and immorality to attract viewers!

Thanks for your kind words! 🙂

      1. While I have appreciated this list of good wholesome viewing, I am positively stunned at the hate expressed here against those in the gay community. This is thinking from 100 years ago. And comments that are not appropriate “viewing” for any age group. Jesus did not turn his back on anyone. Who are you to judge??

        1. Brooke Poston says:

I’m sorry you feel that way, Carolyn. The Bible says that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He changes not. Whether the world’s morals and values change, Christ’s word still stands true. Although I don’t agree with the lifestyle, I don’t hate people who identify as gay. Though I choose to stand by God’s standards when it comes to Biblical truth. Maybe these posts could help you to understand: https://www.theferventmama.com/should-christians-judge/ and https://www.theferventmama.com/christ-bible-homosexuality . Have a blessed day!

          1. Your response is an eye-opener. Thank you very much for being loving enough to tell the truth. Thank you also for your suggestions on the shows. It must not have been easy trying to find good shows that didn’t conflict with your morals and I admire the fact that you did and shared with us.

        2. I think you using the word “hate” to describe the same words I have read here is a quite far-reaching, exaggerated, and slightly a matter of warped delusion. Homosexuality is, biblically, a sin. A sin that God refers to as an abomination. We are called to hate the sin, not the sinner. Watching shows that glorify any kind of sin, especially an abomination of a sin is probably not sound.

        3. Heartwing says:

All of the views here are understood to be personal opinions…as is yours. I WANT to know what shows have content that doesn’t align with Christian beliefs. That’s why I came here. There is no hate involved. If this were any other religion’s views reflected here, would you find it “hateful”? If not, then the issue is your perception. If so, then you are obviously on the wrong blog.

        4. Hey I’m not against the gay community but one MUST speak the truth in love. When the woman in the Bible was caught in adulatory he said “sin no more more.” It is unbalanced to love without truth or truth without love. And sister for the love of my neighbor I’m going to stand up and say something if it hurts them or others I love. People living this lifestyle hurt themselves and the sanctity of marriage instituted by God. Secondly, I don’t want my teens seeing this behavior as acceptable because it goes against the Laws of Gd and Jesus. The more we expose and accept our children to this kind of environment the more we break the institution of family and marriage.

        5. William goddard says:

Oh shut up nobody said anything about hate just simply dont want to see any Homosexuality shows because just dont believe that way its against my life style and the bible it’s funny to me that if someone disagrees with you it always hate . Just have some clean shows on.

        6. Hi Carolyn, We are tolerant but see no reason shows have to include so many gay characters and the marketing of homosexuality to teens is unreal. It is wrong to instill in kids’ minds that if they have a best friend of the same sex maybe they are gay. Kids need to have strong platonic friendships but this promotion of homosexuality interferes with that. Most of the shows aimed at kids now include many gay characters, way more than are actually in the population. Why is that? A recent show (Black Lightening) had lesbian teens making out in the family home with the parents totally ok with that–if it had been hetero kids doing the same thing, no way would mom and dad been cool about it. What is going on here when teen sex is fine as long as its gay??

      2. Kristi Allen says:

I am glad I continued to read your review to the end, and the comments. Call the Midwife though good, I also had to stop watching due to the Lesbian nurse and her partner, and then another episode that I stopped mid-episode and yelled because a secret gay men meet ups.

    2. I loved Midwife then they ruined it by bring in the gay couple and using the House to more or less shack up in, very disappointed.

  29. A hundred thank yous for this!

    1. Brooke Poston says:

For sure, Diane! This one has been so successful that I’m working on a second list! Be sure to come back and check often! Or you could just sign up for our newsletter to be sure you don’t miss it! 🙂

  30. Leverage for older aged/adult that my wife and I both loved. Psych is another one my wife loved, more than me, but I ended up liking it. I thought it really was some kind of psychic show, but it’s not, it’s a guy pretending to be psychic.

  31. ninnyswife says:

Fuller House is not so clean! It has a LOT of sexual inuendos (which REALLY disappointed me) and the ladies dress rather skimpy! Quite a few ‘bar scenes’ when they have ‘girls night out’

    1. Brooke Poston says:

Hi! This post was written before Fuller House came out, but I could totally agree with you! I was SOOO disappointed with it! I didn’t even bother finishing it. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

    2. I agree with Fuller House comment. I remembered loving it in the olden days (and loved Candace in the Hallmark movies over the holidays), but no way am I going to sit and watch that with my son. Even my husband was shocked at the first few episodes and stopped watching it.

  32. We’re old types; like ‘Murder She Wrote,” “Leverage,” “Life,” “Numb3rs,” “Agatha Christie’s ‘Perot’,” in addition to the shows you listed. ‘Clean,’ respectable shows are hard to find on Netflix, and we end up watching “Leverage” over and over. I particularly like the episode named “The Lost Heir Job” in the second season of that series.

    1. Brooke Poston says:

“Murder She Wrote” is such a good one, I can’t believe I forgot about that one!! I don’t think I’ve seen the others. I’ll have to check them out since I’m working on another list. What genre are these, and are they all on Netflix?

      1. Sadly, no. Only Life is. Murder She Wrote, Leverage, and Poirot were, but Netflix played its cruel hand in those cases.

  33. Granite Falls is also actually REALLY REALLY REALLY great. I didn’t expect to like it one bit based off the description but I’m hooked. I don’t know what Netflix is doing but there needs to be another season

    1. Brooke Poston says:

That’s one I’ll have to check out! Did you mean “Granite Flats”, that one seems like what you’d be talking about? I searched for Granite Falls though with no luck. I might add it to the next list when I get it checked out!

      1. Oops, yes. Its Granite Flats. I ended up binge watching it. It’s a 50s era mystery. I didn’t think I would like it, and neither did my siblings -they’re into reality tv, empire, scandal, etc…and when they saw me watching it they became hooked too.

  34. Hi Brooke! Would you have more options please? I’m trying in vain in looking for a teen-adult series that’s fit for me, e.g., adventure, war, mystery…

    Thanks a lot!

    1. Brooke Poston says:

Hi Ray, have you tried “Sherlock” or “Elementary”? Those are a couple great options. “The Bletchley Circle” is a good one, and “Luther” may be one you can try. The BBC usually has some great options, but be aware that some of them can be inappropriate. You can always Google reviews to be sure that it’s good to watch. 🙂 Enjoy!

      1. Luther is absolutely not appropriate for family viewing!

    2. Just Add Magic is the best for family, I’m a senior but really enjoyed it and hoping for a 3rd season. Unfortunately I think it’s only available on Prime.

  35. Hey! I am in love with heartland!! It is by far the BEST tv series I have seen in a while. I love the horse part, because I love all animals. I recently finished the ninth season. They are still working on coming out with more, but I have no where to watch them. Any suggestions on another series like heartland? I like tv series with a lot of episodes, to keep me busy.

    Thanks

Hi! I’m not sure of your age range, but there are many series that you can find on Netflix depending on the genre you’re looking for. If you want to check out a few movies, I know that “A Gift Horse” and “Camp Harlow” are similar in nature to “Heartland”. There’s also a lot of horse movies on Netflix as well. However, I’m not very familiar with many other similar series. If you haven’t already, you should definitely check out “When Calls the Heart”. It’s one of my favorite!

  36. Hello! I am 13 (soon-to-be 14) and I am having a really hard time finding a good funny or adventure show on Netflix that my parents agree with. Do you have any suggestions?

      Hi Erin!

Thanks for checking out This Modest Mom!

I would definitely say that When Calls the Heart would be GREAT for those of any age! My little sister, who is 11, loves it! AND the second season just cam out on Netflix recently!
I don’t know very much about adventure shows, but you could also check out some of the oldies that were around when I was your age. I’ve also introduced my sis to those and she’s been happy.
      Saved By the Bell
Full House (Fuller House comes out on Feb. 26th!)
      The Cosby Show

Those are some great and clean shows to start with!

      Good Luck!
