First, why would you want to make your self-care items?

Unfortunately, the green and clean movement has exposed the fact that some of our favorite everyday products include harmful ingredients. In anything from your disinfectant to your toothpaste, you’ll find chemicals, parabens, sulfates, and other products that can be harmful to the environment and your health.

When you make your own beauty products, you know exactly what’s going into them and take back control over the narrative of healthy self-care.

Further, there are many other benefits of DIY beauty products:

  • healthier for your family
  • safer for you and the environment
  • can be made in reusable containers
  • often cheaper than store-bought

Are Essential Oils necessary?

Essential oils are not a “must-have” for any of our beauty recipes, but they do provide extra benefits that can help give an extra boost to your beauty routine!

If you don’t know, essential oils are plant extracts that are carefully extracted and bottled. These days, you can buy essential oils nearly anywhere, but just like with any other products, you should be aware of scams, gimmicks, and harmful additives.

I 100% support Young Living’s brand but feel free to do your do-diligence and seek out the brand that fits your needs. You can read more about Young Living, how to earn free Young Living products, and _ .

Why Choose Young Living? - The Fervent Mama: You should know that not all essential oils are the same. So you really should be asking yourself why you should choose Young Living.

I do not support the use of drug-store brands, big box brands, or products that do not have a “clean” promise. A great way to begin your research on essential oil brands is to see which ones allow you to visit their farms and see how their products are made!

The impact Essential Oils have in your beauty products.

Essential oils provide amazing benefits when added to your beauty routine. Some essential oils are known to help and aid in reducing inflammation, clearing acne, hydrating dry skin, minimizing pores, reducing the appearance of scars, sunspots, and acne, promoting hair growth, getting rid of dandruff- and so much more.

Essential oils are not a end-all, be-all, product. When used properly and with other healthy living changes, they can help aid in promoting a healthy living lifestyle and take the place of harsh additives and ingredients that cause other issues.

They also provide the option to have great fragrances that aren’t harsh on your skin and hair!

How to Make Your Own Toothpaste

A great toothpaste is essential for good personal hygiene and dental health. Whether you’ve run out of your favorite brand and need more in a pinch, or maybe you’re just looking for a more natural brand, anyone can make their own homemade toothpaste quickly and easily!

Homemade toothpaste can be used as a powder or formed into a paste with adding liquid. For long term storage, the best option is to make a tooth powder that you can then add liquid to later or use by dipping a damp toothbrush into the powder.

For a Quick Homemade Toothpaste you’ll need:

  • 1/4 cup Baking Soda
  • 3 Teaspoons Coconut Oil (melted or liquid form)
  • 5 drops Peppermint or Wintergreen Essential Oil
  • 5 drops Thieves Essential Oil
  • 5 drops Orange Essential Oil

To use, simply mix these ingredients together and use them like you do your usual toothpaste. If you only have baking soda in the house you can place some on a wet toothbrush and use it as is. The taste is less than pleasant but will get the job done in a pinch.

For a better homemade toothpaste, you can make your own herbal blended toothpaste with detoxing ingredients like bentonite clay and activated charcoal for a quality homemade toothpaste that rivals expensive organic brands currently on the market at a fraction of the cost.

For a Better Homemade Toothpaste you’ll need:

2 tablespoons bentonite clay
1 teaspoon activated charcoal or 2 capsules broken
5-6 drops liquid xylitol
1/10 teaspoon (or a tiny pinch) salt
5 drops Peppermint or Wintergreen Essential Oil
5 drops Thieves Essential Oil
5 drops Orange Essential Oil

In a small bowl, mix the bentonite clay, activated charcoal, and salt, then mix together. Add xylitol and essential oils and mix until well blended. Transfer to an airtight container for storage. This toothpaste will keep well for a couple of weeks and last a tad longer if kept refrigerated.

About the essential oils in these homemade toothpaste recipes:

Peppermint Essential Oil is great for fresh breath and helps to tone down the taste of the other ingredients that sometimes aren’t so pleasant. Thieves is a great blend of anti-bacterial essential oils that can aid in promoting healthy oral balance. Orange Essential Oil is a great whitening agent!

How to Make Your Own Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo can be a major time saver when you are in a rush or just too tired to deal with washing your hair. Using a dry shampoo is also a great way to get rid of oily hair without damaging your hair from over washing. Dry shampoo can also be quite expensive and packed with chemicals you may not want to have in your hair on a regular basis.

Dry shampoo is easy for you to make for yourself from home with little effort. The best part is that you can even make your own dry shampoo using items inside your kitchen already making it a great option for when you are in a hurry.

Your best option for making your own homemade dry shampoo is to use arrowroot powder as it has a slightly better color for this than corn starch. But if all you have in the house is corn starch,  don’t worry as it will work out just fine. You can use this as it for light-colored hair. Sprinkling into your hair, fluffing it around and brushing it out.

For darker colored hair you will want to mix half arrowroot or cornstarch with half cocoa powder. This will help to make the color darker so it will blend in with your dark hair easily. The cocoa powder also leaves behind a great scent if you want to leave the cocoa fragrance!

If you’re a fragrance kind of girl, you can add fragrance to your dry shampoo by adding 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oil and mixing it well before using it. This is great for summertime when your hair may need a little fresh-up after a long day before going out, or after a trip to the gym.
